Research methods: in the process of scientific research, abstract-logical method, methods of theoretical generalization, system analysis, analysis and synthesis, economic-statistical analysis were used - for a comprehensive study of the object of research.The information basis of research is legislative and regulatory acts, agreements, information of international organizations, survey materials of the management of innovative activity of individual economic entities at various levels, materials of scientific periodicals, Internet resources. The novelty of the obtained results is determined by proposals for improving the methodology for evaluating the innovative activity of the external economic sphere of the economy of the country and the region by expanding the list of individual and group indicators. A business model of a modern domestic operator of the distribution system, which contains nine interconnected blocks, and a descriptive matrix of the analysis of competencies, resources, abilities and projects for an energy company, which made it possible to evaluate specific projects of innovative activity, is proposed.
