These substances form an independent phase, separated by the interface between the phases in which the reacting substances are located. They have a highly branched surface. They are excellent accelerators of chemical reactions. The main disadvantage of heterogeneous catalysis is the complexity of separating the catalyst from the products and its recirculation. On the contrary, for homogeneous catalysis, separation is either not required at all (stationary catalyst bed) or carried out by such simple methods as filtration or centrifugation. Much more complex processes, such as extraction, rectification or ion exchange, are required to isolate heterogeneous catalysts.
