The methodological approach taken in this research is a methodology based on postcolonial studies, which involve a critical reading of texts that reflect the impact of various forms of power on the lives of subordinate communities and on the collective and individual thinking of their representatives. Both general-scientific (descriptive, observation, comparison, induction, deduction, sometimes statistical) and proper-linguistic (discursive-historical approach of critical discourse analysis, elements of content analysis, corpus analysis, analysis in terms of dependencies) methods were used. The study 1) offers some important insights into interpretation of the grammatical status of the Ukrainian vocative and the sphere of its use; 2) traces the ways of the loosening of the linguistic norm in the Ukrainian grammar books of the Soviet period and the ways of indexalising the Ukrainian vocative as a feature of peasant speech; 3) presents an understanding of the vocative case as a full-fledged case in the grammatical system of the modern Ukrainian language and denies the statement about its grammatical isolation in the sentence structure; 4) demonstrates the functional potential of the vocative case at the present stage and the influence of the colonial status of the Ukrainian language on its case system. The findings can make a contribution to the field of a new edition of the Ukrainian spelling rules, working of the National Commission for State Language Standards, designing textbooks for secondary and higher schools as well as provide important knowledge about Soviet language policy and language planning to decisions-makers on language and information policy in Ukraine.
