The aim of work is to organize and summarize the data of all post-Chernobyl radiation monitoring of surface waters of Ukraine, to assess the long-term trends of their radioactive contamination, to investigate the main factors and processes that determines the migration of 137Cs and 90Sr in water environment. All available primary data on the activity concentrations of 137Cs and 90Sr in surface waters of Ukraine in various observation sites, which were obtained by different laboratories, have been collected in a single database. A series of observation data on the activity concentrations of 137Cs and 90Sr in water for all observation sites on the rivers and reservoirs were analyzed, the transfer values of these radionuclides through the observational сross-sections were calculated. The balances of 137Cs and 90Sr activity in reservoirs were calculated. The long-term trends of water radioactive contamination were studied The role of suspended sediments in the transport of radionuclides was evaluated. The 137Cs runoff coeficients from contaminated catchments were calculated. According to radiation monitoring data, the effectiveness of water protection measures was assessed. The results of research on radioactive contamination of the bottom sediments of the Dnieper reservoirs are presented. Methodological aspects of research, approaches to mapping radioactive contamination of bottom sediments are highlighted. The maps of reservoirs bottom contamination with 137Cs are presented. The stages of contamination formation of bottom sediments are described, the peculiarities of the vertical distribution of radionuclides in the thickness of different types of bottom sediments are investigated.
