The aim of the work is to single out the latest scientific methods of foreign language teaching, to analyze the effectiveness of each method for the development of various skills of students' speech activity, and to develop an algorithm for learning a foreign language for professional and academic purposes. The concept of "academic direction" of foreign language learning has been analyzed and defined. The process of forming a specialized foreign language thesaurus has been identified and described in close connection with the formation of a thesaurus in general, namely the acquisition of general and specialized knowledge, assimilation of methods and techniques for working with sources, including electronic sources, as well as lexical and grammatical material in the process of perception, reception, content decoding and formation of student’s own information. The development of language speaking skills in the tandem of individual, team, general group work during practical classes in offline/online mode has been monitored. The sequence of stages of skills formation has been defined and visualized. The necessity of learning a foreign language in accordance with the specifics of professional disciplines has been outlined. Placement tests – entrance qualification tests – have been worked out and implemented; the initial level of mastery of a foreign language is determined for the group streaming and selection of the most effective (for a particular level of the learners’ proficiency) textbooks and manuals. Innovative methods and techniques of teaching foreign languages, appropriate in the conditions of distance learning during the pandemic and the war, have been studied and implemented, as well as new interactive technologies of mixed form of education.
