It was shown that the surface hardness of railway wheels of the T brand, classes B and C, which are manufactured in accordance with DSTU GOST 10791:2016 and AAR M-107/M-208:2018, is close to the hardness of rails of categories R260Mn, R260, which are manufactured in accordance with the EN 13674:2016 standard, respectively, which are not heat-reduced, mainly this level of properties is associated with the presence of a larger amount of carbon. Taking into account the results of the dependence, it was established that the hardness of class C wheels is approximately at the same level with the bulk hardness of heatstrengthened rails of category II (DSTU 4344:2004). A comparative analysis of the strength and plastic characteristics of railway wheels and railway rails showed that the plasticity of railway rails is significantly lower, which is associated with the high carbon content and the presence of a thermal hardening process with the formation of a pearlite structure, while railway wheels have a predominantly ferrite-pearlite structure, which is more plastic.
