Conducting the synthesis in hydrogen facilitated the formation of boranes, which activated the process of MAB phase formation. After synthesis, the phase composition consisted of the TaAlB₄ phase and residual TaAlB₈. It is suggested that the formation of TaAlB₄ proceeds through an intermediate reaction involving the formation of the TaAlB₈ MAB phase. The obtained boron carbide-based composites with the addition of TaAlB₄ were fabricated using spark plasma sintering (SPS) in the temperature range of 1100–1700°C with MAB phase contents of 5, 10, 15, and 20 wt.%. Effective sintering of the composites occurred only with 20 wt.% TaAlB₄ at 1500°C. Higher temperatures led to the incongruent decomposition of the MAX phase. The resulting composites demonstrated high flexural strength (580 MPa) and fracture toughness (6.2 MPa*m0.5), as well as a twofold increase in wear resistance compared to materials without MAB phase additions. These findings hold significant potential for applications in fields requiring materials with high strength, fracture toughness, and wear resistance, particularly in defense industries, aerospace technologies, and energy systems.
