Various biofilm components, such as exopolysaccharides, amyloids, and extracellular DNA (eDNA), provide plant protection, facilitate genetic information exchange, and promote range expansion. The study formed and investigated model microbial communities associated with Antarctic vascular plants and demonstrated the defining role of eDNA and polymeric matrix in their biofilm formation. The most diverse eDNA samples were observed at temperatures of 4 and 15°C, in other cultivation conditions, Pseudomonas sp. extracellular DNA was dominant. The obtained results indicate the complex structure and dynamics of microbial communities in biofilms of Antarctic vascular plants and the diversity of their adaptation mechanisms to different cultivation conditions. For air-liquid-solid surface (ALS) biofilms, temperature and cultivation duration are key factors determining biofilm strength, while for liquid-solid surface (LS) biofilms these factors do not have a significant impact, opening up new perspectives for studying alternative parameters. These results can be useful for optimizing cultivation conditions of endophytic microbial communities for biotechnological purposes and in studying the mechanisms of plant-microbe interactions in this unique region.
