It is shown that the next step to improve the physical efficiency, reliability and service life of absorber rods is transition to combined use of neutron absorbing materials of dysprosium hafnate (Dy 2 O 3 ⋅HfO 2 ) and boron carbide. For PWRs operating on MOX fuel, the use of hafnium diboride (HfB 2 ) is promising. The report presents some aspects of the performance of hafnium diboride as a promising neutron absorber as compared to other neutron absorbing materials; the thermodynamic aspects of the synthesis of hafnium diboride from the starting compounds of hafnium oxide, boron and boron carbide during vacuum sintering were studied; the effect of vacuum sintering temperature on the synthesis completeness and characteristics of hafnium diboride pellets was investigated; the corrosion behavior of hafnium diboride pellets in simulated VVER-1000 reactor coolant medium at T = 350 °C and P = 16 MPa was studied; the compatibility of hafnium diboride pellets with VVER-1000 absorber rod cladding material at 1000 °C and 1200 °C was investigated; comparative calculations were performed of the physical efficiency of neutron absorption and changes in the isotopic composition of materials such as boron carbide and hafnium diboride. The scope of work under the stage has been completed in full. Product Description popup.authors Dzhamirzoiev Albert D. Dykyi Іvan V. Zuiok Valerii A. Kirsanova Olha S. Kolodii Ihor V.
