In Europe, the magpie Pica pica (L.) and the hooded crow Corvus cornix L. are among the species that stand out in this regard. The choice of nesting sites for these birds in urban areas may be an adaptation to an evolutionarily new habitat and is an interesting element for studying urban ecosystems. Moreover, examining interspecific competition in these species helps to understand the role of the crow as the primary exploiter, its impact on the breeding populations of urban birds, and the response of the magpie to a predator species in the context of bird overpopulation in urban landscapes. During the project, a complete mapping of the nests of crows and magpies was carried out in model plots with different types of urban landscapes, covering a total area of 21.1 km². It was found that the type of urban landscape does not play a significant role in the choice of nesting sites for these birds. The higher level of urbanization in Kyiv, compared to Poltava, positively influences the number of crows, with four times as many crows per unit area in the capital. Our research on habitat preferences revealed a significant overlap in the chosen environments for the magpie and crow nesting areas. Specifically, these two species prefer areas covered with lawns and artificial surfaces, tend to settle near buildings, and avoid dense tree plantations. An analysis of the spatial interaction between these two species when selecting nesting sites showed that the magpie's nesting behavior is influenced by the presence of the crow, leading it to avoid nesting near crows. The impact of the crow's presence on the placement of magpie nests can be traced even at a distance of 700 meters. This response may be one of the adaptations that allow magpies to thrive in urban landscapes, enabling them to successful Product Description popup.authors Dupak Valeriia S.
