To achieve this goal we plan to solve following tasks: 1) We suppose to conduct an ion chromatography analysis of positively and negatively charged snow, as well as and background snow that were collected during wintering in 2022 near the Akademik Vernadskyi station with aim to determine the content of such cations as: sodium, potassium, magnesium, strontium, lithium, ammonium, and such anions as: nitrate, nitrite, sulfate, chloride, bromide. 2) We suppose to compare the chemical composition of positively and negatively charged snow and to analyze the possible reactions that can take place under these meteo conditions, which can explain a composition differences between positively and negatively charged samples. popup.description2  The presented work is the first attempt to verify in field conditions the existence of a relationship between snow charging and changes in its chemical composition. The objects of the study are snow samples collected during blizzards in near the “Akademik Vernadsky” station from electrodes of specially designed equipment ("Trap for Charged Snow "). The idea of the project was following: if charging of snow can influence chemical processes, then differently charged and uncharged snow particles will have different chemical compositions. The analysis of snow samples demonstrated that the concentrations of ions, which source is sea salt, are much more higher in charged samples than in background snow. Positively charged snow particles are more concentrated than negatively charged ones. The distribution of ions, the source of which is biota - algae (bromide), penguin nesting (potassium, phosphate, ammonium, calcium, nitrates), is changeable, so it is difficult to find clear patterns for these ions, but charged snow samples are also more concentrated in most cases. Comparison of the measured ion concentrations with the range of expected concentrations and the ratio present in sea salt revealed that the samples of charged snow in all experiments are depleted in chloride, sulfate and magnesium (Cl-, SO42-, Mg2+) and this difference significantly exceeds the measurement error of these ions. The dependence of the "losses" of these ions on the percentage of sublimated water shows the presence of a threshold of 80%, after which the "losses" of ions dramatically increase. This pattern can be explained by the hypothesis proposed by authours. Thus, the project confirmed the existence of a relationship between the charging of snow particles and their chemical composition. Product Description popup.authors Bazylevska Mariia S.
