Quantitative changes in aerosol parameters were analyzed for fires in the Kyiv region during active hostilities from February to March 2022, as well as after explosions followed by fires at energy industry facilities. Satellite remote sensing data were examined for two different emission sources: ecosystem fires and explosions with subsequent fires at oil depots and energy industry facilities. The study highlights the challenges in retrieving quantitative aerosol parameter indicators for assessing the impact of emissions or forming an evidence base for future legal proceedings to seek reparations for environmental damages. Among all aerosol components, only the aerosol mass fraction in the vertical column of atmospheric air can be used to identify high-pollution hotspots, aerosol mass in the atmosphere, and transport patterns; however, this is feasible only on cloud-free days. Aerosol optical depth exhibits weak variations and can only be applied in conjunction with the mass fraction. The Ångström exponent, in none of the cases, allowed clear identification of the dominance of coarse aerosol fractions as the prevailing phase in polluted plumes. Unlike qualitative sensing with characteristic visual traces, reliable changes in quantitative parameters are highly limited in their applicability.
