The process of ionization of 6p, 6s, and 5d shells of Pb and Bi atoms by electron impact was theoretically investigated. Calculations were carried out in three relativistic approximations: distorted waves, Coulomb-Born and dipole binary collisions in a wide range of energies - from the ionization thresholds to 700 eV. The behavior of the energy dependences of the partial ionization cross sections and the full direct ionization cross section of these atoms in various approximations, as well as in comparison with the results of other authors, was analyzed. The ionization cross sections of the subvalent 5d shell of Pb and Bi atoms were calculated for the first time. This shell is found to contribute twice as much to the total cross section of direct electron impact ionization than the 6s shell (up to 26% for Pb and up to 38% for Bi), showing the importance of considering this process in modeling different types of plasmas. The obtained results made it possible not only to interpret the available experimental data, but also to modify theoretical approaches and approximations for future calculations of the fundamental characteristics of complex electron-ion systems. As a result, the first results of ionization cross sections of the Tl+ ion were obtained, which made it possible to obtain energy and dynamic characteristics, atomic constants, and modeling of the main mechanisms of interparticle interaction.
