Purpose - to determine the smoke-forming capacity of cables during their combustion. Research methods - analytical (analysis of domestic and foreign regulatory framework, guidelines and technical documents, information brochures, manuals, reference books, test reports and other literary sources, information from the Internet) and experimental methods of research to determine the light transmission coefficient during flame burning of cables on the created test equipment in accordance with the European method. In the course of the work, we analysed regulatory documents and other sources of information on the requirements and test methods for determining the smoke-forming capacity of cables used in Ukraine and the EU. The equipment for measuring the smoke density during flame combustion of cables, which meets the requirements of the European standard EN 61034 (parts 1 and 2), was created. A passport, technical description, operating instructions, programme and methodology for equipment verification were developed and its initial verification was carried out. The test method was tested on the equipment created by conducting experimental studies of several brands of cables used at construction sites in Ukraine. Proposals for amendments to building codes regarding the requirements for smoke-forming capacity of cables were prepared to implement the requirements of Law of Ukraine No. 850-IX ‘On the Provision of Construction Products on the Market’, improve the fire safety of building and construction elements, eliminate technical barriers to trade, improve and bring the national regulatory framework for assessing the fire hazard of building and construction elements in line with the requirements of the European Union and World Trade Organisation standards.
