It was noted that the reaction of the studied strains to salinity depends on their growth medium. For further studies, S. meliloti AC08 and SCHM1-48 were selected as the most resistant to 2 % NaCl. The strains 448, AC88, and M4 were also found to be tolerant to the studied doses of sodium chloride. It was found that all the selected strains are able to form nodules on the roots of plants under salinity conditions. However, only the use of S. meliloti strain AC88 for pre-sowing inoculation of seeds ensured the formation of a functioning symbiotic system under salt stress in the early stages of plant development, starting from the stemming phase. Bacterisation of alfalfa with M4, AC08, AC88 strains contributed to an increase in the aboveground mass of plants under salinity conditions compared to control plants (without inoculation) and the variant with the strain СХМ1-48. The effectiveness of pre-sowing inoculation of alfalfa seeds to increase their productivity under salinity conditions was confirmed and the strain S. meliloti AC88 was noted as promising for further research on its use in alfalfa cultivation under salt stress.
