It is supposed to base at statement of dependences of structure and adsorption capacities of raw coal thermochemolysis products on process conditions. popup.description2 The object of the study is the structure and adsorption properties of carbon materials (CMs) obtained by alkaline thermochemolysis of long-flame coal at low KOH/coal ratio. The aim of the work is to evaluate the effect of thermohemolysis temperature on the structure and adsorption capacity of CMs towards phenolic compounds, methylene blue (MB) dye, iodine, and Pb(II) cations in aqueous media. Research methods: elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction, IR and UV spectroscopy, titrimetry, adsorption measurements. Alkaline thermohemolysis (≤825°C) was established to transform coal into CM with a specific surface areaup to 1530 m2/g, which consists of 93% of the micropore surface. Temperature dependences of the elemental composition, supramolecular properties and porous structure characteristics of new CMs were obtained. It was found that the surface of ultramicropores is maximum for CMs obtained at 600°C, and its decrease is compensated by an increase in the surface of supermicropores. The portion of the micropore surface is 93–97%. The adsorption activity of new CMs with respect to Pb(II), MB, phenol, 4-chlorophenol and iodine was investigated. The adsorption kinetics obeysis to a pseudo-second-order model. The rate-determining stage is the interaction of the adsorbate with surface centers. The adsorption isotherms are described by the Langmuir and Freundlich models. The temperature dependences of adsorption capacities were established. The adsorption contributions of ion exchange reactions, interaction with the π-system of polyarenes (π-sorption), and volumetric filling of mesopores were estimated.
