The purpose of the work is to analyze the current state of methods used to determine the stresses and strains of shell structures in order to improve existing approaches. The research method is information-analytical. Based on the conducted analysis, the study considers the following: analytical methods for analysis of shell structures under combined loads; existing engineering approaches to determine stresses and strains of vertical tanks; methods of calculating of the stress-strain state of horizontal tanks; the state of modern experimental approaches and the use of new materials in design of shell structures.The field of application is energy industry, and mechanical engineering. The results obtained at this stage will be used in the next stage for development of a geometric and finite-element model of a steel tank subjected to combined loads.
