Komissarenko Institute Of Endocrinology And Metabolism of The National Academy of Medical Science of Ukraine" popup.description1 To determine the consequences of COVID-19 in combination with diabetes mellitus, and to investigate the causal relationship between the incidence of coronavirus disease, biological age and chronic hyperglycemia popup.description2  Diabetes mellitus (DM)-related extraordinarily high in-hospital mortality in patients with COVID-19 has been identified. Hospitalized individuals with COVID-19 and DM have a lower minimum oxygen saturation level than patients with COVID-19 without DM and a significantly higher level of a pro-inflammatory marker (c-reactive protein) and a marker of thrombotic disorders (D-dimer) than in individuals with COVID-19 without DM. In hospitalized individuals with COVID-19, regardless of age and antihypertensive treatment, the odds of dying from COVID-19 increased with increasing fasting blood glucose, regardless of the presence of diabetes. A reduced risk of death was found for non-DM patients with COVID-19 treated with renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors compared with the corresponding risk for normotensive patients not treated with antihypertensive agents. 2 years after hospital treatment for COVID-19, quantification based on 7-day actigraphy revealed a significant decrease in physical activity in individuals in the COVID-19 group compared to the control group. Physical fitness assessment using the 6-minute test also revealed worse performance in the COVID-19 group. After standardization by age, a decrease in indicators of physical fitness, physical activity and an increase in body mass index were confirmed in the group of people who had a history of hospital treatment for COVID-19 2 years before. These results indicate an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the near future. The development of physical activity monitoring programs for persons who have suffered a severe form of COVID-19 should become a task of preventive medicine.
