Continuous improvement of these detectors design and methods of their production is an urgent task for all industries working with ionizing radiation sources. The purpose of this research work is to develop a technology for obtaining combined scintillation elements for detectors for nuclear power plant radiation safety systems. Within this framework, one of the important tasks is to increase the neutron sensitivity of the detector. For this purpose, a technology for synthesizing the scintillation material zinc sulfide activated with silver (ZnS:Ag) was developed. The obtained material was used to manufacture a annular neutron-sensitive scintillation element, which in its characteristics is not inferior to existing commercial analogues. In addition, the annular configuration of the scintillation element allows to significantly reduce the amount of scintillation material while maintaining the light output. Also, based on a mixture of the obtained ZnS:Ag powder and the neutron converter dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(12) (carborane), a neutron-sensitive scintillation material ZnS:Ag/carborane was developed; its thermal neutron detection efficiency is 49,2%, which exceeds existing analogues. Using the ZnS:Ag/carborane scintillation material, a scintillation element with a thermal neutron detection efficiency of 85 %, which exceeds known analogues, was manufactured. The obtained scintillation elements can be used to create highly efficient detectors for detecting neutrons against a gamma-ray background for experiments in high-energy physics, nuclear power engineering, environmental monitoring, and other fields of science and technology.
