Stage 1: Analyse the causes of failure of tailings dams and sludge ponds. Results and novelty: incidents at tailing dams in Ukraine and around the world were analysed, and the causes that led to the development of emergencies were identified. The main provisions of the research are used in the educational process and are the basis for the next stage. The work is important for improving the environmental safety of mining areas. It is recommended to continue research at stage II - Development of a methodology for visual inspection of the technical condition of protective dams.
