The genotyping of animals for the vertnin gene was carried out using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique. The developed primers and selected amplification conditions, which include a primer annealing temperature of 50°C, allow the synthesis of vertin gene amplicons with an expected molecular weight of 411 bp for the mutant Q allele and 120 bp for the wild-type allele (delete, W allele). The mixture of amplicons was analysed by electrophoresis in a 2% agarose gel. The sizes of the obtained fragments were determined using the 1kb DNA Ladder molecular weight marker. Photographic documentation was performed using a Canon digital camera. As a result of the developed and optimised technique of genotyping by the vertnin gene (VRTN), a sample of large white pigs belonging to the State Enterprise ‘State Farm “Stepne”, Poltava region, was tested and 13 animals with the WW genotype, 12 animals with the heterozygous variant of the QW genotype and 5 animals with the homozygous variant of the QQ genotype were detected. The detection of animals with different genotypes in the sample indicates the polymorphism of the vernix gene. The calculation of the information content of the marker polymorphism (VRTN) revealed that the PIC was 0.299, which is optimal for further use of this molecular marker to search for associations with individual pig performance traits.
