The anisotropy of the mechanical properties of YAG single crystals grown by the HSC method in a reducing carbon-containing environment was studied, depending on the crystallographic orientation of the surface and the angle of deviation. The microhardness and crack resistance of YAG ceramics were determined in comparison with YAG single crystals and depending on the average grain size. The influence of the average grain size of ceramics and abrasive on the roughness and surface defect state of functional surfaces was studied. It was established that regardless of the type of processing, under other conditions being equal, the surface roughness of ceramics is noticeably greater, than for a YAG single crystal. During chemical-mechanical polishing of YAG single crystals, the disturbed layer is completely removed and the roughness for the crystallographic surface (100) is Ra  0.6 nm, for YAG ceramics the surface morphology follows the grain microstructure and for samples with the smallest grain size (5 μm) the roughness reaches Ra  2.17 nm. It is shown that the mechanism of mechanical polishing and the surface morphology depend on the ratio of the abrasive and ceramic grain sizes. Using X-ray structural analysis, a non-destructive method for assessing the depth of the near-surface damaged layer for YAG ceramics after various types of surface processing was developed. Under the investigated mechanical processing conditions, the thickness of the disturbed near-surface layer of yttrium-aluminum garnet ceramics does not exceed the average grain size.  Product Description popup.authors YeFYMENKO Inna A.
