Determination of the energy efficiency of heat accumulation in the underground permeable layers of the Earth popup.description2  Based on mathematical modeling of the process of temperature wave movement in unsaturated soils and aquifers, it is theoretically substantiated that the upper layers of the Earth below the freezing depth are an effective source of low-potential thermal energy for the construction of heating and energy supply systems using heat pumps. It is calculated that the depth of propagation of the heat wave is 0.94 m per day, which corresponds to half the temperature fluctuation period. It is analytically substantiated that the course of soil temperature depends to a greater extent on external factors: solar radiation, air temperature and humidity, snow cover, geographical coordinates of the area, nature of vegetation cover, relief, height above sea level. Internal factors, such as physical and thermophysical properties of soils, have a lesser influence. An analysis of the effectiveness of the use of gravity heat pipes for heat extraction from the upper layers of the Earth has been performed. Based on the calculations performed, it was proven that an ultra-long gravity heat pipe can transmit a heat flux of 4×107 W per 1 m2 of the cross-sectional area of the heat pipe over long distances with almost no losses. The energy potential of unsaturated soils and groundwater of the upper layers of the Earth in the territory of Ukraine was calculated, which is 15.7 million Gcal per year for petrothermal resources and 30.2 million Gcal per year for hydrothermal resources.
