The purpose of the study is to analyze the current state of development of ultrasonic flowmeters and their classification. The process of development of ultrasonic flowmeters in three generations is considered, which differ in measurement error, sensitivity of ultrasonic sensors, sensitivity to changes in the flow profile, level of energy consumption, digital data processing. The presence of diagnostic functions, level of design automation and their modeling of operation. Today, flowmeters are on the verge of revolutionary changes in gas flow measurement, namely, the mass replacement of turbine and rotary flowmeters with third-generation ultrasonic flowmeters. These flowmeters offer superior metrological and operational characteristics, and also have an expanded set of diagnostic functions, which allows them to be classified as information and measurement systems. Mechanical flowmeters, which have dominated the market for over a century, are likely to be significantly displaced by ultrasonic flowmeters over the next 5–10 years, taking into account the gradual decrease in their price. The regulatory and production base is already ready to support this transformation. In addition, the developed international regulatory documents for ultrasonic gas flowmeters are considered, and examples of flowmeter modeling using specialized software packages are given.
