KILN DRYER, WOOD, EQUILIBRIUM MOISTURE CONTENT, OUTDOOR USE, THERMAL ENERGY The object of research is the process of drying lumber for outdoor use in a convective periodic kiln dryer. The purpose of the work is to reduce resource consumption in the process of drying lumber for outdoor use. Research methods: analytical mathematical modeling, wood drying theory methods, operations research theory methods, optimization theory methods, and mathematical statistics methods. The influence of the final moisture content of wood on the loss of thermal energy through the kiln dryer enclosure and the energy consumption for moisture evaporation was determined. Using the example of the city of Kharkiv, by evaluating the average equilibrium moisture content of wood based on the results of meteorological observations, it was substantiated that the rational value of the final moisture content when drying wood for operation in outdoor conditions is 14%. A method for optimizing the nominal power of a power module for heating kiln dryers has been developed, taking into account the impact of its output power on efficiency and the possible reduction in the productivity of kiln dryers in the event of insufficient provision of thermal energy. The feasibility of using an additional coolant circuit with a relatively low temperature for heating drying chambers at the initial stages of drying is shown. The economic effect of using the proposed measures is due to the reduction in fuel consumption for heating kiln dryers. A promising direction for further research is the use of renewable energy sources in the heating system of kiln dryers.
