The scientific task is to develop models and methods of information technology capable of ensuring the effective processing and use of big data obtained from monitoring systems. The work reviews modern methods and technologies for processing big data for better water resources management. It is established that: (1) despite the intensive development of intelligent sensing and monitoring technologies, many water resources still lack integrated assessments based on big data to support water quality assessment, monitoring and surveillance management; (2) growing data requirements require increasing the power and efficiency of tools and methods for their processing. With the exponential growth of data, traditional data mining and analysis algorithms cannot fully meet the needs of data processing, which necessitates the development of new processing models with reasonable computational cost; (3) when visualizing big data, the signals coming to the monitoring system may be too dense and blurred, which leads to problems with the analysis of long records and does not allow for quick orientation in the data, which requires improvement of visualization technologies. The results of the analysis of the current state and trends in the development of water body monitoring systems show the need to develop effective models and methods of information technologies for processing big data. The paper sets and solves the current scientific and applied task of improving the quality of work of information and analytical systems for monitoring water bodies.
