A total of 154 literary sources were used in the preparation of the report. The object of the research is the scientific and natural history museum collections of the SMNH of the NAS of Ukraine. The subject of the research is the methodological foundations of the expert assessment of the scientific potential of natural collections in the state part of the Museum Fund of Ukraine. The goal of the research is to develop the methodological foundations for the expert evaluation of the scientific potential of the natural collections of the SMNH of the NAS of Ukraine, aimed at determining their place in the scientific infrastructure of Ukraine and the world, as well as promoting the scientific and educational significance of natural collections for the preservation of natural heritage, biodiversity, and fundamental and applied scientific research. The analysis of international experience and the regulatory framework of Ukraine revealed inconsistencies in the criteria for assessing natural collections in current legislation. It was found that Ukraine lacks a clear regulatory framework for the creation and circulation of paleontological collections. A prioritized evacuation system is proposed, which includes three groups: the first - typical specimens, exhibits of high commercial value, institutional "icons”. The second - rare and endangered species, voucher specimens. The third - poorly documented items, educational collections, and the raw materials collection. A methodology for the integral expert assessment of natural collections has been developed. A new evaluation system for individual museum items is proposed, taking into account scientific potential, historical and institutional significance, commercial value, educational potential, and the condition of preservation of the object.
