Registration Date 26-02-2025 Organization Institute of Carpathian Ecology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine popup.description1 The purpose of the work is to find out the distribution, current state, structural and functional parameters and environment-creating functions of ancient natural forest ecosystems under the conditions of global climate change, as well as the structural and functional organization of various blocks of forest ecosystems (autotrophic, heterotrophic and soil) and exchange processes between them in natural ancient forests with signs of quasi-paralis, which are adapted to the edapho-climatic conditions of the western regions of Ukraine for the development of ecological models of renaturalization of secondary monodominant unbalanced stands. The research methodology is based on a comprehensive ecosystemological approach to the study of natural forest ecosystems, in particular their genesis and structural-functional features, assessment of structural-functional parameters and environment-creating functions, including the structural and functional biodiversity of the main groups of invertebrates and vertebrates, the biotic cycle of the main elements -organogens, soil bioproductivity and their role in carbon sequestration and deposition. popup.description2 The virgin forests and old-growth forests of the Carpathian region were decoded using remote sensing methods and the NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), a quantitative indicator of photosynthetically active biomass. Comprehensive studies of old-growth forest ecosystems were conducted within the research sites in the Ukrainian Carpathians (Central Gorgany, Skole Beskydy) and Western Podillia to determine the peculiarities of their structural and functional organization. It has been found that old-growth deciduous or mixed forests, whose identifiers are common oak (Podillia) or forest beech (Ukrainian Carpathians), have a predominantly complex spatial structure and an appropriate degree of mosaicism, are characterized by a significant diversity of ecological niches and are important habitats for many vertebrate species, including model species of avifauna and Chiroptera. The organic carbon stocks in different blocks of forest ecosystems were determined, and the CO2 emission from the edaphotope of the phytogenic field of old-growth trees was estimated using an innovative approach. The organic C stocks in the forest floor, dead wood, and soil were studied. Initial monitoring studies of the specific flux of CO2 from the soil surface of old-growth forests were carried out and a differential assessment of the intensity of carbon dioxide generation by mineral soil and forest floor was made to determine the amount of carbon dioxide emissions. Estimated the amount of carbon sequestration in dead wood and soil profile Systematization and assessment of 40 ecosystem services in the territory of Skole Beskydy National Park in accordance with the recommendations of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, as well as monetization of 10 ecosystem services.
