Object of research: the historical center of Belz, the protected area "Middle Town", the territory of the State Historical-Cultural Reserve in Belz. Research methods: archival, bibliographic, and cartographic study of the territory; surface survey of the territory; descriptive, graphic, and photographic recording of all archaeological discoveries; classification of the discovered movable archaeological material and determination of its cultural and chronological affiliation; georeferencing of all archaeological discoveries and marking their locations on the city plan. In the course of the monument protection works, four pits with a total area of 16 square meters were laid. The maximum thickness of the cultural layers in the study area was 4.6 m. According to the results of the work, it was found that this is the largest thickness of the cultural layer on the territory of Belz. The earliest materials are represented by fragments of ceramic pottery from the late 14th century, which corresponds to the period of the first location of the city under Magdeburg rule. Cultural layers dating back to the late Middle Ages have a characteristic filling in the form of various wood. This situation has been repeatedly observed during research of the historical part of cities. The remains of the wooden buildings discovered in pit 1 also date back to this time. The most recent stratigraphic formations date back to the 19th century. Materials from this period are represented by ceramic, glass, and numismatic finds.
