The purpose of the work was to prepare accounting documentation for a local archaeological monument - "The hillfort and the rock-cut cave monastery of St. Onuphrius" in the Rozhirche village for its registration, preservation and protection. A field survey of the archaeological complex was conducted, with photo fixation and instrumental topographic survey. It was determined that the archaeological complex consists of 3 parts - the hillfort, the castle site and the rock monastery, and is located 170–720 m south and southeast of the Rozhirche village. The boundaries of the hillfort and the castle site are outlined by the remains of defensive structures - ramparts, ditches and escarped slopes. The territory of the monastery includes rocky ledges with artificially arranged premises (cells) in them, a grotto and terraces in front of them. The area of the hillfort is 22.58 hectares, the castle site is 0.33 hectares. The rock monastery has an area of 0.262 hectares. The hillfort reflects the historical development of the region of the Early Iron Age. Its construction and functioning are associated with the antiquities of the population of the Gava-Holigrady culture (8th–7th centuries BC). The castle site reflects the development of the region in the early modern period. Its construction and functioning are obviously connected with historical events in these areas. The castle site represents the remains of a type of fortification, which was often the residence of local nobles. Monuments of this type were actively integrated into the system of defensive fortifications on the Transcarpathian roads. The rock monastery, as a component of the Rozhirche archaeological complex, is important for the study of religious beliefs, the origin and development of monastic culture in the princely and early modern periods, and the development of rock religious architecture. Monuments of this type are a unique phenomenon in Eastern Europe. Product Description popup.authors Ilchyshyn Zoia A. popup.nrat_date 2025-03-10 Close
