This explains the relevance of examining the functionality of the national component within both modern and postmodern cultural systems, as well as its connection to premodern traditions. A. Smith emphasizes that «the continuity of premodern influences must be analysed in conjunction with modern and postmodern tendencies and their observable interrelations if the aim is to explain the current spread of cultural identities and ethnonationalism across all parts of the world» (Smith, Anthony. Nations and Nationalism in a Global Age. Kyiv, 2006, p. 73). The Slavic world endured the historical drama of its existence in the 20th century, as geopolitical ruptures forced entire nations to choose new national paths. The societal practice of identity development and its reflection in the literature of Slavic peoples reproduce significant processes that, undoubtedly, should be integrated into Ukrainian experience. Literature primarily represents human beings in the fullness of their societal existence, including the development of their national identity: the formation process, crises of individual identification, the dynamics of self-consistency, and the dialogue between the individual and various communities. The issue of intercultural communication becomes increasingly significant, which sometimes emerge when interpreting past events or forming the mythological and symbolic resources of a nation under new conditions. The working hypothesis of the problem was the thesis on the historical evolution of the national self-identification process and its reflection in the works of representatives of Slavic literatures at various stages of their development: from the era of nation formation to modern and postmodern times.
