Objective: to assess the level of transformation of the Black Sea steppe, identify threats and risks to the preservation of this unique natural complex. Methods: the research employs a retrospective analysis of the region’s economic development based on historical sources, remote sensing data to study coastal-steppe dynamics, and an assessment of changes in bird populations due to hydrological disturbances. Findings: the economic use of the Potiivska section began in the early 19th century, primarily through livestock farming, which initially had no critical impact on natural ecosystems. However, the introduction of irrigation proved most destructive, as water discharge transformed coastal steppe ecosystems. Notably, ecosystem recovery processes were observed when water discharge ceased. The Russian armed aggression has introduced further threats. During occupation, wildfires repeatedly swept across large areas of the section. Despite the severe ecosystem transformation, the area still retains recovery potential. A set of management recommendations has been developed to accelerate ecosystem restoration, to be implemented after the de-occupation of the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve. Data on mapped anthropogenic elements within the Potiivska section will enhance the monitoring system for its natural complexes. Additionally, the experience gained in analysing ecosystem dynamics via remote sensing can support long-term monitoring of both the Black Sea Biosphere Reserve and other protected areas.
