The purpose of the project is to create a multi-mineral modular brine extraction process for the recovery of valuable metals and minerals from brines produced at seawater desalination plants. The objective of the project step, in which the DSTU team was involved, is to select granular and fibrous sorption materials for scandium recovery from the solutions simulated brines produced at seawater desalination plants, to study parameters of scandium sorption and desorption by selected resins in batch and column modes, and to issue recommendations on application of selected resin brands to manufacture 3D printed adsorption modules. Research methods involve physical-chemical analysis, method of the sorbent different weight portions, limited volume method, mathematical simulation of experimental data on equilibrium and kinetics of scandium extraction. Preliminary scandium recovery was tested using granular and fibrous sorption materials; several materials with the highest performance were selected. Equilibrium, kinetic and dynamic parameters of scandium sorption were studied for selected resins from selected solutions. Based on the data obtained, recommendations were issued for the partner university regarding the use of specific resin grades when manufacturing 3D printed adsorption modules. An additional study was performed on secondary scandium concentration after its recovery from the solution simulated the seawater desalination brines.
