The spine trimming mechanisms have been classified by the nature of the cutting tool movement, the type of cutting tool movement, the number of cutting tools, the method of material feed, and the principle of operation. It has been established that designs with a movable knife, flat-parallel or closed-loop cutting tool movement provide a reduction in the energy consumption of the trimming process. An analysis of spine trimming mechanisms by energy consumption has shown that the optimal option is the use of a knife with a curved bevel that moves along a closed loop trajectory. This design allows to minimize the friction force between the knife blade and the book block material, as well as to ensure the stability of the spine trimming process. An economic analysis of energy costs has been carried out and it has been found that the use of this design can reduce energy costs by 15-20% compared to other mechanisms. Recommendations have been proposed for the implementation of optimal spine trimming mechanism designs, the development of new equipment, further research on the optimization of mechanism parameters, and the implementation of the results in the training programs for the printing industry specialists.
