Aim of the study: to improve the felling system in the forests of Ukraine based on close to nature forest management in order to increase the forests’ productive capacities and amplify their environmental and protective functions. Methodology of the study: comparative ecology method with the use of forestry, geobotanical, ecological and phytocoenotic methods and a number of integral forest mensuration methodological approaches. The study was conducted at 100 stationary research sites designed for investigating main-use felling, forming and sanitation felling, and natural regeneration specificities. The study also summarized results on the qualitative characteristics of the phytomass of trunk components – including local and average natural and basic wood densities, as well as the densities of wood with bark and bark alone – in planted Scots pine stands in the Northern Steppe, under different silvicultural regimes and forest site conditions.
