The microstructure of the interaction zone between titanium and aluminum was studied. It was found that a transition layer at the interface between solid titanium and liquid aluminum is formed. An increase of the holding time of titanium packages in the aluminum melt from 1 to 15 minutes leads to transition layer thickening. An increase of the holding temperature from 670 °C to 720 °C leads to a slight increase of the transition layer thickness for a holding time of 1 min, without significantly affecting the transition layer thicknesses formed in 5, 10 and 15 min. Fractures of composites as the result of the tensile process do not lead to significant delamination, which indicates a high bond strength of the layers. Having regard to ease of manufacture and attractive physical and mechanical properties, obtained VT1-0/AK8M layered composites are an excellent candidate for structural and functional applications that require a combination of low weight and high strength.
