The purpose of the research work is to solve an important scientific problem of improving the theoretical provisions of the legal status of a Ukrainian lawyer and to develop, on their basis, and implement in practice scientifically substantiated proposals for strengthening the norms of the current legislation on the bar, in order to ensure the proper implementation of the right of a person to professional legal assistance. Results and their novelty: thorough theoretical and comparative research was carried out into the content and essence of both the legal status of a lawyer and its structural elements (primarily professional duties), taking into account the latest trends in reforming the legislation on the bar and changes in ensuring the procedural order for the implementation of a person's right to legal aid. Based on the results of the research, new scientific knowledge was obtained, in particular, regarding: theoretical and methodological approaches to improving the institute of advanced training for lawyers; development of individual elements of the mechanism of the institute of advanced training for lawyers in order to create appropriate conditions for its implementation; formation of the Standard for Advanced Training for Lawyers and the feasibility of introducing specialization for Ukrainian lawyers; disclosure of the essence of the moral and ethical qualities of a lawyer as a fundamental component of the practice of law; determination of the relationship between the moral principles of the institute of advocacy and the principles of independence and autonomy of the professionalism of a lawyer.
