The purpose of this study is to substantiate and develop principles of TDT for the working surfaces of machine parts, aiming to improve their operational reliability by controlling the formation of quality parameters on the treated surfaces and the structure of their nanocrystalline surface layer. Research methods - in the theoretical part, scientific approaches based on the fundamental principles of mechanical engineering technology were used; experimental studies were conducted using standard and specialised equipment and tools. The validity of the identified regularities is confirmed by the results of experiments, by theoretical provisions based on mathematical experimental design methods, the latest research methods and consistent results obtained under laboratory, bench and production conditions. The work's main scientific outcome is the development of technological methods for forming strengthened surface layers with a nanocrystalline structure (NCS) on massive parts, based on theoretical and experimental studies. These methods can be applied in enterprises to improve product quality by forming hardened NSC that increase the wear resistance of machine parts' contacting surfaces. The Karpenko Institute of Physics and Mechanics of the NAS of Ukraine, Kingston University (UK), Rzeszow University of Technology (Poland) and Opole University of Technology (Poland) are conducting research on the controlled formation of NCS in the surface layers of machine parts. Based on the results of the research work, 9 papers (Scopus and Web of Science), 1 paper in Ukrainian journal, and 5 abstracts were published.
