Understanding the mechanistic relationship between the molecular features of connexin channels and the effects of their inhibitors in epilepsy models will allow the development of new therapeutic agents against epileptic seizures. The goal of our scientific project is to clarify the role of gap junctions in the generation of epileptic activity and the potential of gap junction blockers in anticonvulsant therapy.

 At the first stage of the project, we conducted electrophysiological studies on the effects of quinine, quinidine and mefloquine on epileptic activity in the rat brain slices. The effectiveness of drugs in different models of epilepsy was estimated. Completed experiments on the expression of genetic structures with a changed structure of gap junction. The method of obtaining a pylocarpin-induced model of epilepsy in rats has been established.
