The “smart” biomimetic polymers were synthesized in preparative quantities as thin, porous, mechanically stable polymer membranes via in situ polymerization. The synthesized polymer membranes, which contain supramolecular receptor sites for recognizing sulfamethoxazole within their structure, were used as the basis for smartphone-based sensor systems for efficient detection of this compound in pharmaceutical formulations and environmental samples outside of laboratory conditions.
