A distinct group of apotropaic marks was identified, reflecting magical and superstitious beliefs in the religious and cultural context of that time. For the first time, an attempt has been made to systematize and classify the types of crosses recorded on the church’s walls, as well as determine their possible symbolic and religious meanings. The motives that may have prompted the creation of these images were also analyzed. A number of characteristic common features have been identified, which show that these inscriptions belong to a broader Christian tradition and a common symbolic space. At the same time, certain differences have been noted, in particular the absence of judicial inscriptions and the presence of specific images. However, the collected materials give reason to assert that the graffiti of St. Panteleimon's Church demonstrate a number of similarities in both their spatial arrangement and symbolic meaning to similar epigraphy on Western European shrines. Preserving and researching graffiti has particular significance, as it reflects the mentality, beliefs, and daily experiences of people from past eras. The investigation of images and inscriptions highlights the various forms of popular piety, magical beliefs, and pilgrimage traditions, which often went beyond the boundaries of official religious life as reflected in liturgical texts and canonical art. That is why graffiti is an invaluable source for a comprehensive understanding of the spiritual and social life of the Medieval and Early Modern periods.
