Makarenko popup.description1 Research and monitoring of animal populations of NRF objects in Sumy region. popup.description2 The report presents the results of the research project “Monitoring the Status of Animal Populations in the Protected Areas of Sumy Region”, aimed at assessing the current condition and dynamics of the regional fauna. The study was conducted to identify trends in population size, distribution, and ecological characteristics of various animal taxa that form an integral part of the natural ecosystems within the protected areas of the region. A complex of field and laboratory methods was applied, including route and census observations, visual-acoustic monitoring, trapping of invertebrates using standard pitfall and light traps, photo documentation, and analysis of literature and collection data. Surveys were carried out within the territories of Hetmanskyi National Nature Park, landscape reserves Bannyi Yar, Basy, Vilshanka, and other protected sites. As a result of the monitoring, more than 200 animal species were recorded, several of which are listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine, the European Red List, and the Bern Convention. A decline in the abundance of certain species was observed, primarily due to anthropogenic pressure, habitat fragmentation, and climate change. At the same time, stabilization or recovery trends were noted for some invertebrate and bird populations within the conservation areas. The obtained results are important for further planning of nature conservation measures, improving the ecological monitoring system, and developing regional biodiversity conservation programs.
