Study of the mechanisms of formation of plasticity and stability in representatives of fish of various ecological groups, as well as the mobilization of protective functions, metabolic changes and the ability of the fish organism to reproduce. popup.description2 Studies of erythrocyte cells of the peripheral blood of fish of different ecological groups in the water bodies of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ) revealed a shift in the spectrum of the size distribution of red blood cells compared to the control. The most characteristic change was an increase in the proportion of cells in the ranges of 450–550μm3, which indicates the predominance of enlarged or partially swollen erythrocytes in samples from water bodies contaminated with radionuclides. Control samples demonstrated a sharply pronounced peak within 350–450μm3, which reflects a normal population of erythrocytes without significant deformations. In general, structural and functional changes in erythrocytes were recorded in all studied samples of fish from CEZ water bodies, which are caused by chronic low-dose radiation exposure and indicate the sensitivity of morphometric parameters of blood cells to the impact of ionizing radiation. It was established for the first time that the indicators of lipid peroxidation products (LPP) and antioxidant activity (AOA) in fish tissues have a clear species and tissue specificity. Redfish and perch demonstrate an increase in the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) with the activation of AOA indicators (effective, albeit intense adaptation), Prussian carp - a decrease in MDA against the background of high AOA (high adaptive potential). In pike, especially in Lake Glyboke, the accumulation of MDA is combined with low AOA, which indicates the depletion of antioxidant protection and high sensitivity to radiation stress. During all seasons of the year, in most of the studied species (pike, Prussian carp, roach, rudd, perch) an increase in the content of cortisol in blood plasma in the water bodies of the CEZ compared to the control was recorded. The highest values are characteristic of lakes Glyboke and Azbuchyn, as well as a number of residual areas of the Chernobyl NPP cooling pond. This indicates a chronic stressful state of fish.
