As a result of the second stage of the project, methods of chemical modification of the polymers by flavonols were developed using the direct esterification reaction. Synthetic polymers, which were used as matrices are polyacrylic acid and a copolymer of polyacrylic acid and polyacrylamide, as well as a natural polymer-polysaccharide – alginic acid. To study the conditions of the esterification reaction, two model flavonols were used – 7-hydroxyflavonol and 4'-hydroxyflavonol. The most effective solvent system was found – dioxane-water, which allows the polymer to be completely dissolved. The selection of the ratio of components showed that the best results in terms of dissolution and the highest efficiency of grafting flavonols (70-75% and 80-82% substitution of carboxyl groups, respectively for 7-hydroxyflavonols and 4’-hydroxyflavonols) are observed at a solvent ratio of dioxane to water 2:1. The spectral properties of the modified polymers and their gels were investigated using IR, electron absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy methods. The swelling characteristics of modified gels in aqueous solutions were studied, as well. In order to prepare for the next stage of the project, changes in the spectral properties of the gels in the presence of rare-earth metal ions were previously investigated.
