A total of 100 crossing combinations were performed, with an average seed set of 37.9%, resulting in 1,177 pods and 4,479 hybrid seeds of spring field pea (Pisum sativum L.). In the nurseries of initial breeding material, 1,254 lines and 14,301 elite plants were selected that did not segregate by seed coat colour or seed pattern. In the F1–F3 hybrid nursery of spring field pea, 577,951 hybrid seeds were selected; the selection coefficient ranged from 1.3% to 27.0%, with an average of 8.06%. In the F4–Fn generations, 5,456 accessions were evaluated and 907 spring field pea lines were selected. In the control nursery, based on field observations, seed yield and quality, 234 superior spring field pea accessions were identified. During the study of inheritance patterns of economically valuable traits under mixed cropping, plants that survived in competition with the white-seeded field pea variety were selected; subsequently, on the oat background, plants inheriting competitiveness were identified. The average survival rate reached 30.8%, while selection within individual accessions ranged from 4.0% to 26.6% (average 12.5%). At the third stage, 55 spring field pea accessions were evaluated under oat and white mustard backgrounds. Plant survival averaged 30.9% under oats (ranging from 13.0% to 59.4%) and 24.0% under white mustard (ranging from 5.4% to 60.0%). In variety testing, the average yield of vetch–oat green mass was 32.6 t/ha, with 6.76 t/ha of dry mass, 3.67 t/ha of dry mass of spring field pea in mixture, and 1.54 t/ha of pure spring field pea seed. As a result, 21 accessions with high forage productivity and 22 with high seed productivity were identified. New spring field pea varieties Oazys and Viryneia have been developed.
