Project objective: Study of the processes of formation of the Antarctic Slope Current (ASC) and the Antarctic Coastal Current (ACC) on the shelf of the West Antarctic seas, including as a factor of biological productivity under conditions of Antarctic climate change. The report presents the results of the analysis of the trajectories of water masses around Antarctica, calculated using the Parcels Lagrangian model improved by the authors of the project. The study was carried out to determine the structure of the ASC and ACC around Antarctica, as well as the influence of the Antarctic Peninsula on the development of these currents. A new statistical characteristic was developed for the analysis - the particle density distribution function. The three-dimensional current data required for modeling in the area around the entire Antarctic were obtained from calculations using the specialized Antarctic Circulation Model WAOM. The calculated trajectories of virtual particles in Bransfield Strait are consistent with observational data using ARGO drifters and buoys released by the National Center for the Study of the Antarctic. With the exception of the western continental slope of the Antarctic Peninsula, the AST is a continuous strip of currents around Antarctica. Areas have been identified in the region of 180° and 90° S.D. where water masses separated from the AST, entrained by the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), and which gradually deepen, forming the Antarctic Deep Water Mass. The connectivity of the AST around Antarctica may be a factor affecting the connectivity of organisms on the Antarctic shelf and biological productivity.
