In particular, a detailed molecular-genetic analysis was conducted on 18 natural populations of C. relaxa from islands of Maritime Antarctica (Graham Coast) and 6 samples from southern South America (Magallanes Region, Chile) using the method of assessing intron length polymorphism in β-tubulin genes. As a result of the analysis, a low level of molecular-genetic polymorphism in C. relaxa was established based on the length of the first intron of β-tubulin genes; however, a wide range of unique DNA profiles was identified, determined by the presence and length polymorphism of additional amplicons. Length polymorphism of the first and second introns was detected, and the samples demonstrated two groups of profiles, each represented both in Maritime Antarctica and in southern South America. The analysis of sequenced ITS-fragment sequences revealed a number of unique and typical polymorphisms. Based on these data, two groups of DNA profiles were identified: the first is characteristic mainly of samples from Maritime Antarctica, while the second is associated with samples from South America and, partially, with samples from Petermann Island. The analysis of sequenced rps4-fragment sequences showed an expectedly lower genetic polymorphism among the samples. Only one mutation was detected, indicating the stability of populations subjected to strong selection, which may reduce diversity by fixing certain allelic states. The obtained data are important for understanding the genetic structure of populations and the possible adaptive processes taking place in different parts of the C. relaxa range.
