popup.description1
The overall goal of the project is to provide a new understanding of the key processes of atmosphere-ocean-ice interaction in the Arctic and Antarctic, their reactions and impact on global climate change and their consequences for society and the environment. To this end, a new numerical model of hydrothermodynamics of cavities in the ocean under shelf glaciers will be developed, which will be implemented in the model of ocean circulation and calculations of the processes of formation of deep ocean waters will be performed. The trajectories of Antarctic water masses will be studied using the Lagrangian model. The potential contamination of the Arctic Ocean with radionuclides under the influence of climate change will be estimated using mathematical models. The work is performed as part of a consortium of leading EU research groups in the fields of polar meteorology, oceanography and climatology.
popup.description2
The research aims to provide new insights into key local-regional-scale physical and chemical processes for atmosphere-ocean-ice interactions in the Arctic and Antarctic, their responses and impacts on projected changes in global circulation, and their implications for society and the environment. The current research phase was to study the circulation under the Ross Ice Shelf and compare it with the circulation under the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf (FRIS) using data from the University of Helsinki's numerical flow simulation and the PARCELS numerical trajectory model applied by IMMSP NASU. The anticyclonic circulation beneath the Ross and Filchner-Ronne glaciers is caused by the inflow of water through troughs off the western coast of the Weddell and Ross Seas. Converted into Ice Shelve Water (ISW), it also flows out through troughs in these seas. However, some of the transformed water beneath the FRIS flows through the Filchner Trough between Berkner Island and the mainland, while water beneath Ross Glacier flows into the Ross Sea in the strait between Roosevelt Island and the coast. A Application of the Lagrangian model allows the study of the trajectories of Antarctic water masses. The obtained scientific results are implemented into the model of the formation of Antarctic water masses. Articles published in international journals, prepared based on the results of work -1, abstracts on international conferences -2. KEYWORDS: West Antarctic sea shelf, Lagrangian methods, circulation modeling, water mass flows, statistical analysis.
