Objective of the work – The R&D is aimed at developing scientific and technical-economic recommendations for optimal management of the aging of SNF storage containers. Research methods – Analysis of the neutron-physical, thermal, and chemical processes occurring in the elements of SNF storage container equipment, physical and mathematical modeling of these processes. R&D results – The handling of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) is an important scientific and technical task, considering the crucial role of nuclear energy in ensuring Ukraine's energy independence. The intermediate report for stage № 2 includes: Evaluation of the monitoring program for the structural and functional integrity of the elements of ventilated concrete storage containers for SNF; Conditions and mechanisms of aging of the elements of ventilated concrete storage containers for SNF; Recommendations (corrective actions) for slowing down or managing the aging of the elements of ventilated concrete storage containers for SNF; Evaluation of the radiation-shielding properties of concrete with additives of combustible shale ash and basalt-boron fiber for SNF containers. In carrying out the R&D, national regulations on nuclear and radiation safety, ensuring the safe operation of nuclear power plants (NPPs), existing NPP operation infrastructure, and global trends in SNF management have been taken into account. Recommendations for the use of the results – The R&D results will be implemented when substantiating the SNF management program. Application area – Nuclear energy sector of Ukraine.
