To create new constant self-pollinating maize lines with high and stable seed productivity, cold-resistance, as well as resistance to basic diseases and pests, from the various genetic plasmas source material selected in previous years. On the basis of the best of them, to synthesize highly productive precocious (FАО 190-300) maize hybrids, tolerant to biotic- and abiotic phenomena, as well as with high adaptive and ecologic capacity in conditions of western Forest steppe of Ukraine. The project provides, using the inbreeding method, field assessments and selection, to create and to investigate new selection material (inbred lines, special simple hybrids) of various genetic plasmas (Iodent, Raid, Lancaster, Lacon, Mih, etc.). As a result of the project performance based on the obtained new parental forms, to create and submit to the State trial the precocious maize hybrids which would exceed the performance standards by 10–15 %, and be characterized by grain harvesting moisture lower than that of standard hybrids by 2-4 %. Growing the newly created hybrids will favor the increase of gross grain harvest in the country, as well as reduce energy consumption for drying, and will have a positive impact on the population food security of Ukraine. The hybrids are being created for using in food industry, as well as for animal husbandry needs. popup.description2 New source material of genetic plasmas Aiodent, Reid, Lancaster, Lacon, Mix, etc., tolerant to stress phenomena and characterised by high seed productivity, resistance to root lodging, major diseases and pests, has been studied and evaluated. Basic information was obtained on the main parameters of 1950 self-pollinated generations I1–I7 and their characteristics according to a set of economically valuable traits. New parental components (8 samples) of the genoplasms Aiodent, Reid, Lancaster, Lacon, Mix, etc. were obtained with high adaptive capacity in terms of ‘grain yield,’ ‘grain harvesting moisture,’ and high resistance to negative abiotic and biotic environmental factors. 300-350 new experimental hybrids of FAO 190-300 with grain yield 10-15% above standards, intensive moisture loss by grain after physiological ripeness, high resistance to major diseases and pests, root lodging and plant breakage, high cold and drought resistance. Scientific and methodological recommendations have been developed for the cultivation of promising corn hybrids depending on the maturity group and plant density in the conditions of the western Forest-Steppe of Ukraine. Based on the newly created lines, early-maturing FAO (230-240) hybrids have been synthesized with a potential yield of 13.2-13.8 t/ha, with low grain moisture content at harvest (2-4% below standard), high cold tolerance, drought resistance, resistance to major diseases and pests, and adapted to the conditions of the western region of Ukraine.
